Reading program cultivates critical thinking
Even before classes began, new students explored the university’s intellectual life. This year’s freshmen, faculty and staff examined race through the prism of Notes from No Man’s Land by Eula Biss. “[Students] can have any opinion they want, but they have to support it and have that dialogue,” says First Year Reading Program organizer Alicia Schnell.

Bear Beginnings: Orientation by the numbers
“It’s all about making the students feel welcome.”
Move-in marks the start of the academic year on the Danforth Campus. Some 1,600 freshmen, 100 transfer students and 40 exchange students begin calling Washington University home. They can participate in more than 100 events the next five days as part of Bear Beginnings, the fall orientation program.

A symbolic start to a new academic year
Rites of passage for first-year medical students are donning the white coat — long a symbol of the medical profession — and writing their own class oath of professionalism. Special celebrations in the School of Medicine also welcome incoming doctoral, occupational therapy, physical therapy and audiology students.

New training provided in guarding against cyber threats
To prepare for and stop cyber attacks, WUSTL’s School of Engineering & Applied Science and Olin Business School are launching a new master’s degree in cyber security management this fall. It will train professionals who know how to protect critical information by preventing, detecting and responding to attacks.

Transforming vacant lots
Through a special partnership between the city of St. Louis and Washington University, four winning demonstration projects are testing innovative, sustainable solutions — including sunflower plantings, a compact restaurant, a chess park and a modern agricultural model — to the problem of vacant land.
