Shirley Baker

Vice Chancellor for Scholarly Resources and Dean of Libraries

Shirley K. Baker is Vice Chancellor for Scholarly Resources and Dean of University Libraries at Washington University in St. Louis. She serves on the University Council and leads the University's planning for libraries and scholarly resources.

Baker's professional activities focus on the uses of libraries and scholarly communication. She is the University's representative to the Coalition for Networked Information, and has served on its Steering Committee.

Baker serves on the board of BioOne (an electronic publishing effort) and is past president of the Association of Research Libraries. Baker is an elected delegate to OCLC's Members Council and serves on OCLC's Research Advisory Committee. She is a member of the U.S. National Institute of Health's PubMed Central National Advisory Committee and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network Advisory Board. Baker helped form and serves on the board of the St. Louis Internet Access Consortium (SLIAC) which provides Internet2 access for area institutions. She has served on the boards of the Missouri Library Network Corporation, the Center for Research Libraries, and the National Information Standards Organization. Baker was instrumental in the founding of MOBIUS, a resource-sharing consortium of Missouri academic libraries, and has led its Executive Committee.

Baker came to Washington University from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before MIT, Baker worked at Johns Hopkins and Northwestern universities. She earned her MA in library science and an MA in South Asian languages and civilizations at the University of Chicago, after having worked with computers in industry and serving a stint with the Peace Corps in India. She has a BA in economics from Muhlenberg College in her home state of Pennsylvania.
