EMPLOYMENT

Washington University.
St. Louis, Missouri, Dean of University Libraries, 1989-present; Vice Chancellor for Information Technology, 1995-present

Accomplishments as Dean

Collections: Through licenses for electronic journals, quadrupled the number of journals accessed. With membership in the Greater Western Library Alliance, achieved economies of scale in licensing. Maintained purchasing power for books, primarily through increased use of endowed funds. Strengthened special collections through the addition of a major collection of fine press materials; added papers of author William Gaddis to already-strong modern literary manuscripts collection. Acquired, through a competitive grant process, the archives of Henry Hampton, Jr., best known for his Eyes on the Prize film series documenting the Civil Rights movement. Built collection in support of emerging film studies program (now 33,000 films) with endowment support.

Services: Reach every first-year student through librarian-taught resource discovery sessions as integral part of required Writing and Argumentation course. Fifteen librarians guide 50 classes of first year students through the research process with hands-on sessions. Co-sponsor in collaboration with the Teaching Center two-day ITeach workshops to assist faculty in using technology in their teaching. Support electronic reserves for assigned class readings and music and streaming video recordings of class lectures. Provide advice and guidance remotely through the Chat with a Librarian.

Facilities: Redefined Olin Library, the 180,000 sq. ft. main library and, from 2001 to 2004, oversaw the complete renovation of the library without disruption of services. In 1997 raised funds for and created, in collaboration with School of Art and Arts & Sciences Writing Program, Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book. Classes in the Studio are among the most heavily subscribed in the School of Art. In 1991 created West Campus Library for lesser-used materials and Conference Center in former department store. Moved University Archives in 1998 and four technical services departments in 2001 to West Campus. In 2001 created at film archive at West Campus. Between 1990 and 2000, upgraded facilities in seven departmental libraries. Planned new Earth & Planetary Sciences Library now under construction and new Art & Architecture Library to be competed in 2006.

Professional: Under the Aegis of the Association of Research Libraries, led North American effort to maximize capacity for libraries to share resources with maximum ease and speed and at minimal cost. Our efforts were widely studied and copied both in Europe and in Australia and Japan.

Within Missouri, spearheaded an effort to establish expedited resource sharing among institutions. With 57 Missouri educational institutions in MOBIUS, instituted reciprocal borrowing. All members of MOBIUS - institutions large and small - gain from the Consortium. Washington University annually lends about 9,000 volumes to other MOBIUS institutions and borrows 10,000. MOBIUS supports resource sharing at ten times the speed and 1/10th the cost of traditional interlibrary loan.

Chaired a North American ARL/ACRL Task Force on Recruitment. That task force produced a recruitment video, Faces of a Profession, which is being distributed nationally (and can be viewed at www.library.wustl.edu/whatsnew/newrecruit.html).

Accomplishments as Vice Chancellor

Led University-wide technology planning effort. Spearheaded the creation and implementation of University technology policies. Oversaw creation and management of the University's web presence through multiple iterations, drawing on the editorial expertise of University Public Affairs. Led implementation of common email addressing for the University.
