Originally, there was one steam plant responsible for heating the entire Danforth Campus. By the time steam reached far away locations such as the South 40, much of the heat had been lost, significantly reducing the efficiencies of the heating system. To help combat this inefficiency, smaller steam plants were installed in locations around campus to serve a small number of buildings.
