Washington University in St. Louis, like the State of Missouri, the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County, has limited vehicle idling on campus as of April of 2009. Motor vehicle idling endangers public health, pollutes the environment and wastes fuel and money. Children are especially sensitive to air pollution because their lungs are developing, and they breathe 50 percent more air per pound of body weight than do adults. Diesel exhaust, a likely carcinogen, damages healthy lungs and aggravates existing respiratory and heart conditions such as asthma and congestive heart failure. Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism in children and is associated with poor academic performance and an increased need for special education programs. Gasoline exhaust also contains compounds that aggravate existing heart conditions
