Ibby's Garden

Ibby's Garden, located on the Washington University campus on Forsyth Blvd. between Stix International House and Blewett Hall, music department was created to honor Elizabeth (Ibby) Gray Danforth's active involvement with the University and the Woman's Club during the tenure of her husband's 24 years as Chancellor of the University.

Picture of flower  Ibby's interest in the University was especially appreciated by the Woman's Club of Washington University which is a social and service organization.

Yellow flowersThe Woman's Club is composed of women who are or have been connected to the University as: members of the University faculty, administration, staff, postdoctoral fellowship, graduate student or alumnae, as well as the wives or widows of faculty, administrators, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, or alumni.

Flowers in the butterfly garden  Ibby's Garden was planned and planted and is maintained by The Butterfly Garden Committee with the help of Washington University's Facilities Planning and Management department and the Missouri Botanical Garden. All plant material introduced into the garden provides nectar of food for butterflies and their larvae. To date we have nearly completed the planting of perennials that bloom in the fall and summer; we hope to add a few earlier blooming varieties next year. We are in the process of selecting shrubbery that will add color through the winter months.

The landscaping for the garden was begun in November 1995. The first planting was in May 1996 and the dedication was October 10, 1996. Following is the list of perennials we hope to have incorporated in the garden upon completion:  Flower
