Gaylord Music Library

The Gaylord Music Library was dedicated at Washington University in St. Louis in 1960. The library, like the Tietjens Memorial Music Studio, was designed by the firm of Smith and Entzeroth of St. Louis.

The library was the gift of Catherine Manley Gaylord in memory of her husband, Clifford W. Gaylord, a member of the university’s Board of Directors from 1941 until his death in 1953.

Clifford W. Gaylord

Mr. Gaylord was born in Illinois in October 1883 and attended the University of Chicago.

He took over his uncle’s paper box company in St. Louis and grew the company into what would become America’s second-largest paper board products manufacturer. He served as a Lt. Colonel and Assistant Chief of Staff in the 77th division of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, and a Brigadier General of the National Guard during World War II. After the war, he served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the City Airport Commission, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce. He also made contributions to the Red Cross and the Saint Louis Symphony Society.
